E-textbooks are here!
Here at Cathal Brugha St Library, e-textbooks are now part of our repertoire.
We now have a range of e-books including such standards as Clay's handbook of environmental health, Stephen Page's Tourism management, Chris Cooper's Tourism: principles and practice, Glenn Bowdin's Events management, John Cousins Food and beverage management and Stanley Cauvain's Baking problems solved.
Search for your desired textbook on the catalogue, and if it comes up as an "electronic resource" then you will probably be able to read it as an e-book on the screen in front of you.
There are legal restrictions on copying and downloading, but having the textbook to read on-screen is surely a real step forward!

Cookbooks are here to stay (?)
A blogger confirms what we in this library are always saying: cookbooks are not going anywhere you know!

Free food!
Apparently there is free food to be had in Dublin. You just have to go looking (or foraging in fact) for it. An article in the Irish Times yesterday - The City where the wild things are - describes what is available out there and how it can be cooked. See the article by Catherine Cleary and maybe you could find your own windfalls.

Chocolate is good for you!
Good news for chocoholics everywhere. Apparently chocolate is good for us after all according to this Guardian article. Scientists in Cambridge studied the relationship between chocolate consumption and heart disease and found that eating chocloate is good for us because it is relaxing. So chill out everyone and enjoy those chocolately treats.

Catalogue downtime, end of August
The DIT Library Millennium system, which controls the circulation and catalogue systems, will need to go down on Tuesday 30th and Wednesday 31st August for a system upgrade.
This means that the Library Opac catalogue will be unavailable for those 2 days, and that books will be issued and returned manually.
In addition, some re-carpeting of Library office and counter areas (but not of reading or other users' areas) is due to start this coming week.
However, there is no reason for readers to worry. All our services will continue to be delivered, albeit the old-fashioned way, and Library staff will be on hand at all times to help and advise readers.

A Brave New World at McDonald's but are we loving it ?.
Fast food is about to get a whole lot faster at McDonald's with the introduction to its restaurants in Europe of touch screen technology to make an order and swipe card technology to make payments. McDonalds estimate each transaction will be 4 seconds quicker. Efficiency, progress and innovation are mentioned by McDonalds in relation to this venture but then they would say that, wouldn't they? Is this the end of service with a smile?. Will this change the entire restaurant industry?. Let us know what you think and if you're still loving it.

Weirdest Ways to cook your food
Heston Blumenthal is the undisputed king of experimental cooking, no obstacle stands in the way of this chef so we decided to give him a run for his money. How about Salmon in the Dishwasher? Cooking a whole Salmon isn't the easiest of tasks given its size. It usually ends up in a fish kettle straddling two rings on the hob. So why not put it in the dishwasher? Dishwashers heat their water during the cycle and that heat is enough to poach a Salmon. The trick is to wrap your Salmon lightly in foil and run the dishwasher on the highest and hottest cycle and don't put detergent in but you knew that right?

Brilliant new source for environmental health
All you environmental health people in Cathal Brugha Street may be pleased to know that the library have now obtained a superb new 5-volume Encyclopedia of environmental health, published by Elsevier and with Dr Jerome O. Nriagu as editor-in-chief.
The encyclopedia contains articles ranging alphabetically from Air pollution to Zinc toxicity. Entries are extensively cross-referenced and each article is itself thoroughly referenced. It is also remarkably readable, and is therefore likely to be accessible right down the academic food chain to first-year undergraduates.
All interested persons are urged to treat themselves to a browse. It lives on the reference shelves at shelfmark 614.7

An excellent directory
There is a view these days that paper directories are out of date. That this is not so is proved by a new acquisition here in Cathal Brugha Street Library.
The new second edition of the World Directory of Business Information Sources, a 2-volume reference book, contains contact details for information on virtually every industry in every country on Earth.
This includes government bodies, media and publishing, industry organisations, educational and research institutions. It also has country by country listings for information sources on each sector of industry and on statistical sources for economic and market information.
A look at this directory is recommended for anyone who needs to get hold of commercial or economic information about the big bad world out there.
It is on our reference shelves at no.338.7025

Wireless Printing Available From Personal Laptops
Do you have a laptop with you in the library and you want to print documents directly from it? Well now you can. All DIT libraries now have wireless printing available from personal laptops as well as the normal printing and photocopying service we provide from DIT computers.
To set up your laptop to be able to print to one of the DIT printers in the library simply follow these steps. You will only have to do this once and then each time you go to print you can simply select the printer that you want to print to from a list on your laptop. Its that easy.
Payment for print jobs from laptops works in the same way as other printing- you will need to input your student number and money will taken off your student card.
Now you don't have to leave your study desk in the library to send something to the printer!
