Culinary Arts lecturer and students on Six One News

Culinary Arts Lecturer, Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire, along with students, David Malone and David Kelly, and former Cathal Brugha St student Pádraic Óg Gallagher, the Chef/Owner of Gallagher's Boxty House, were interviewed last week on RTE Six One News about the reintroduction to the retail market of the Irish lumper potato.

The Irish lumper potato was widely cultivated in Ireland during the first half of the nineteenth century and by the 1840s Irish farmers had become massively dependent on the potato. After potato blight caused a series of crop failures, and ultimately the Great Famine of 1845-52 during which a over a million people died, the lumper potato ceased to be cultivated in Ireland.

Now, Michael McKillop of Glens of Antrim Potatoes, who became interested in the history of the lumper potato seven years ago, has reintroduced it to the retail market and it will be available from March 11th.

Printing Exam Timetables

This week, some students have had difficulty printing off their exam timetables. To fully print your timetable from your gmail/DIT email account, use the gmail print icon which is pointed out in the above screengrab. Do not use 'File' and 'Print' on the top menu bar as this will only partially print your email.

Popular e-books in Cathal Brugha St Library

E-textbooks, available through the DIT library website, are becoming very popular with students. In fact, according to recent usage statistics, Cathal Brugha St students are among the biggest users of e-books in the DIT.

A wide range of books are available including, amongst many others, the Larder chef (4th edition) which is a standard text for culinary arts students, Clay's handbook of environmental health (19th edition) for environmental health students, and Tourism: principles and practice (3rd edition) for tourism students.

Chances are, there's an e-textbook suitable for your assignment. While there are restrictions on copying and printing ebooks, they can be read on any computer provided you have set up a library PIN number. To search for e-books simply go on to the library webpage, click on advanced search, limit the material type to EBOOKS, and then enter your search terms. Alternatively, do a basic search and look out for this logo EBOOKS
