LIBRARY CLOSURE, TUESDAY 17 FEBRUARY

Cathal Brugha St Library regrets to announce that due to wholly unforeseen staff shortages, we will have to CLOSE at 5.15pm on Tuesday February 17th. We apologise for the inconvenience caused to our readers. We expect to open normal hours from Wednesday.

Over €100,000 owed to library in fines


A recent article in The Edition, the DIT student paper, revealed that €109,945.29 is owed to DIT libraries in unpaid fines. Only two other colleges, UCD and NUI Maynooth, have libraries where staff and students owe more fines.

The article also reported that last year, according to a DIT spokesperson, fines paid were 'invested back into the student experience' by upgrading library facilities and augmenting library book stock.

Volunteers wanted for film festival

Event Management students and film fans might be interested to know that the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival (JDIFF) are looking for volunteers to work at this year's festival.

The festival, which has been held annually in Dublin for over ten years, has grown to become a major event attracting film makers and fans from all over the world. Volunteers play an important part in ensuring the smooth running of the festival.

The deadline for applications is 20th February 2015. Information on how to volunteer is available here.

Free seminar for small food business start ups


The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) is holding a free seminar to assist people considering setting up, or who have recently set up, a small food business. The seminar takes place on 28th January at the Crowne Plaza Northwood in Santry, Dublin 9.

The seminar will cover a wide range of topics including setting up a business, food safety and new product development.

Representatives from the following groups will be available at Q&A sessions throughout the day:
Two small business owners will also talk about their experience setting up a food business.

Festival of culinary literature


Tickets went on sale yesterday for the Kerrygold Ballymaloe Lit Fest. The festival celebrates food and wine writing, and will be held on the grounds of Ballymaloe House and Cookery School from the 15th to the 17th of May 2015.

Two extra books for Christmas


A lot of students are going to be busy studying for exams over the Christmas period.

To facilitate this, from Monday 15th December until the library closes on Tuesday 23rd December, students may borrow two extra books for the Christmas period.

DIT healthy recipe competition


DIT Sports & Recreation Service has announced a competition to find healthy recipes. The competition is open to all DIT students and entrants should submit recipes that are:
  • Inexpensive
  • Quick and easy to prepare
  • Nutritional
There are three categories:
  • Starters
  • Main Courses
  • Desserts
There are prizes for the winners in all three categories but you'll have to be quick because the competition closes on December 5th 2014.
